Mortgage Lifter Radiator Charlie’s Tomato

This world-famous tomato was created by M.C. Byles back in the 1930s. M.C. Byles was known as Radiator Charlie because of the radiator repair business he owned. He had no education in plant breeding, but created this legendary tomato. He crossed four of the biggest tomatoes at that time, and over 6 years he stabilized Mortgage Lifter Radiator Charlie’s Tomato. In the 1940s, he sold his tomato plants for a dollar. After doing this for several years, he paid off his $6,000 mortgage. Some customers would drive 200 miles (ca. 322 kilometers) for his plants. This is a very flavorful large heirloom tomato which lean slightly towards the acidic side. Our average tomato weights this year weighed from 10oz (ca. 378 gram) to 14oz (ca. 529 gram). These tomatoes could reach weights exceeding 16oz (ca. 605 gram). Some even say they could reach up to 3 pounds (ca. 1,361 gram). This is a great slicing and farmers market fruit.
