5 Best Tomatoes For Canning 2021 Season
5 Best Canning Tomatoes
In this blog, we will discuss our top 5 canning tomatoes from our 2021 growing season. Also, if you have grown a great canning tomato, let us know. Please leave a comment at the bottom of this blog with the name of the tomato.
Australian Beauty – This is a rare heirloom tomato I got back in 2016 that grows these large ox heart tomatoes. Always weighing over one pound and some weighing over two pounds. They are very meaty, sweet, and slightly acidic with not many seeds in them. An excellent canning tomato for crushed tomatoes or sauces. We would suggest planting 2 or 3 of these plants because production is lower but well worth it for the flavor.
Cassidy’s Folly – Created by Tom Wagner, these tomatoes are attractive with their stripes. They are a determinate plant, so when they start coming in they yield a bunch. The taste of these delightful tomatoes is sweet but tart.
Champ Martin – A great canning tomato for canning and sauce, especially if you can a lot to last throughout the winter. These are a heavy producing tomato, have a balanced flavor to them.
Curtis Cheek – Believed to be from Russia. This is a magnificent heirloom ox heart tomato that also has very few seeds in them. They have an outstanding taste, with being very balanced and meaty. We recommend to plant 2-3 of these as well since the production of this variety is lower. They start coming in late in the season, but another tomato that is well worth growing for canning, that is why it is in our top 5.
Knauss Oxheart – Another great large ox heart tomato with the weight hovering around one pound. They have a wonderful sweet but old timey taste to them, but these are a great yielding plant as well.
