About The Breeders Of  Tomatoes We Have

Below, in this blog, we will be describing of each breeder that we carry tomatoes of. Some of these breeders are very popular, some are less known of, and a few are no longer with us. We appreciate all the unique creations they come up from the different shapes, sizes, colors, and most important to me is the flavors, this truly is an art. Lastly, we did this blog to give them recognition because breeding is very time-consuming, tedious work, with a lot of note-taking and picture taking for documentation over the years as to making the variety stable.

The Dwarf Tomato Project

The Dwarf Tomato Project – This is a group of breeders from around the world that work together to bring us new varieties of dwarf tomatoes every year. This is a group by Craig LeHoullier of North Carolina along with Patrina Nuske of Australia back in 2005.

Randy Sine

Randy Sine – Randy was from West Virginia, he truly was a great guy, if you had a question, he would not hesitate to answer it. He passed away in 2020, but he created a few varieties along with getting the heirloom tomato Tree Bottoms Yellow more recognized.

Dan McMurray

Dan McMurray – Dan was from Canada who bred a bunch of tomatoes. He also is no longer with us, but in Canada they have The Dan McMurray Community Seeds Bank, which was started back in 2012.

Millard Murdock

Millard Murdock – Millard was from North Carolina  brought us a few great varieties of tomatoes. He also is no longer with us and passed away in 2019.

Steve Whiteaker

Steve Whiteaker – Steve was from Arizona, he brought some awesome kinds of tomatoes. He also offered early generations of crosses for people to work with too. We think he is no longer with us, he got sick a few years back and no one heard from him since.

Joseph Lofthouse

Joseph Lofthouse – Joseph is from Utah and specializes in land race tomatoes along with other vegetables too.

Bill Jeffers

Bill Jeffers – Bill is from Indiana and brought us a lot of great kinds of tomatoes. He also helped other breeders start out as well too.

Joe Bratka

Joe Bratka – Joe bred a lot of popular tomatoes. He learned how to breed from his father, which his father also bred a bunch of popular and flavorful tomatoes as well.

Karen Olivier

Karen Olivier – Karen is from Canada and partners with other growers to bring us new and exciting varieties each year. Some of here larger tomatoes contains fewer seeds in them compared to a lot of larger tomatoes out there.

Fred Hempel

Fred Hempel – Fred is from California and brings us a bunch of popular bicolored tomatoes.  He also is a plant scientist with a PhD in plants and has been breeding on his farm full time since 2006.

Blane Horton

Blane Horton – Blane is from Mississippi and brings us something new every year. He specializes in dwarf tomatoes along with coming up with all these different colors and striped fruits with great flavor. Blanes tomatoes are more heat tolerant.

Dean Slater

Dean Slater – Dean is from Michigan and brought us several tomato varieties ranging from dwarf to regular size plants. He produced all different colored and shaped tomatoes too.

Reinhard Kraft

Reinhard Kraft – Reinhard is from Germany. He has come up with some great and popular tomatoes over the years. He is still releasing different kinds every year and works with other vegetables as well.

Anna Kozula

Anna Kozula – Anna is a famous breeder from Poland. She breeds all different sizes and colors of tomatoes. I especially like here tomatoes, they are more of a cold tolerant tomato.

Brad Gates

Brad Gates – Brad is one of the most well known breeders out there. He is from California and release numerous new creations every year. He works with cherry tomatoes to beefsteak tomatoes, all different colors from solid to bicolored with stripes. Brad’s tomatoes are more of a heat tolerant too.

Tom Wagner

Tom Wagner – Tom Wagner is from Washington and has been creating and releasing tomatoes since the 1980s. He has many very popular kinds of tomatoes out there. He is another very well known breeder that creates a bunch of beautiful tomatoes with array of color combinations and have great flavors as well.

Ruslan Doochuv

Ruslan Doochuv – Ruslan Doochuv is from Ukraine. He is a 4th generation farmer. Ruslan created many popular varieties over the years. These tomato varieties vary in many different colors and shapes.
