What Products I Use For Diseases
All OMRI Products I Use And Why
In this blog, we will discuss all the products we use to combat pest and diseases. We use only OMRI products on our tomato plants and these are the products we use with where we get the products from with links.
This product is an OMRI fungicide and a bactericide that fights disease pathogens, stops harmful spores from germinating, and disrupts cell membrane growths and attachments of pathogens on leaves. We used to be able to buy this at my local nursery, but the quit handling it since Covid-19. The only place we get it now is at Seven Springs Farm Supply, but we have to buy it in a 2.5 gallon (ca. 9 l) container. This product works great we have used it for over 10 years most organic growers use this product. You might be able to find it online in smaller quantity.
This product is also organic and has a wide variety of uses from preventing and controlling mildews, black spots, leaf curl along with other things. We have used both the Southern Ag and Bonide both are OMRI approved. You can purchase either one of these products at Lowes, Home Depot, or Walmart and the cost is about $15. One bottle normally last me a whole season doing 1000 plants. Sometimes we have some left over, and we will store it in a cool, dark place for next year.
This product is OMRI approved, and it kills aphids, thrips, white flies, and more. This also kills eggs and larvae. You can get this at Home Depot for between $15-$20. A bottle of this will last years. We also store this in a cool, dark place once it has been opened to use the following years.
Another OMRI product but this one controls certain blights, molds, rots, spots, and mildews. We found this product at my local Agway Feed store, and it cost $15. A bottle of this will last years also, just store in a cold, dark place.
All the above products and their prices are for concentrates, so you will have to mix them with water. Also, buying them in concentrate form, you get more for your money.
This is product is an OMRI powder. We use this against Japanese beetles, but it also eliminates flies and controls aphids. We get this at Tractor Supply for $23 for a 40lb (ca. 18 kilogram) bag. There are 2 different kinds of diatomaceous earth, food grade and non-food grade. The one we get at Tractor Supply is the food grade kind. There are many other uses for this also, there are pet benefits to.
How And When I Use These Products
We will mix all the concentrates with water in our sprayer and spray all my plants a couple of days before we put them in the ground. Then about 2-3 weeks later if we have a dry spell we will use diatomaceous earth on them. We only use diatomaceous earth 1 time at the beginning of the season. But for all the concentrates, we spray every 2-3 weeks during the season with our Tomahawk sprayer until about the first to second week of August. The reasons we do it this way is to prevent and control diseases and insects before they happen. But if and when it starts to happen. Doing it this way limits it compared to if they were not treated. The picture below are from the 2021 growing season in Pennsylvania, where we had crazy weather and a lot of farmers had problems with pest and diseases. It would be dry and hot for 2 weeks, and then we would get a solid week of rain and would be really humid. This pattern happened during the whole 2021 season. This is why it is important to treat your plants a head of time because if you do not catch it as soon as the diseases and insects start happening. They have already wreaked some sort of havoc on your plants.
