Eli Tomato – A tomato that weighs over 1 pound (ca. 454 gram) and for us, it did not exceed over 1.5 pounds (ca. 680 gram). They did have a unique flavor to them, being fruity but acidic. This is one of two potato leaf versions on this top 10 list. These large red beefsteaks are good for canning and slicing.Â
Gold Medal Tomato – This is an awesome bicolored Heirloom tomato. This was a heavy yielding plant which produced these gorgeous fruits. The average for this tomato was around 1.5 pounds (ca. 680 gram), I got a few that weighed more but none of them got to the 2 pound (ca. 907 gram) weight though. These large beefsteaks were a hit at the farmers market because of their looks and the taste was juicy and sweet. I see why they named this tomato Gold Medal, it is definitely a winner.Â
John Henry Tomato – This tomato I found at my local farmers market back in 2016 and saved seeds from. Most people who have grown this tomato falls in love with it because of its flavor. They are meaty and balanced with an old timey taste. Most of these I grew this year were 2 pounds (ca. 907 gram) or more in size, these were the biggest tomato I grew this year. Also be sure to check out our Contest, it involves the John Henry Tomato. You will not be disappointed in the flavor of this one.
Kremlin Chiming Clock Tomato – These Rare Heirloom fruits average was around the 1-1/2 pound size, some a little more and some a little less. They were very meaty and had a great balance in flavor. This tomato can be used as a slicer, canning, and they also did very well at the farmers markets too.
Peaches and Cream Tomato – This is an old Amish Heirloom tomato. This year, they were a non-stop producer of these yellow beefsteak fruits. Most were just hitting weights just over 1 pound (ca. 454 gram) to put them in the 1 pound (ca. 454 gram) plus category. But note, I did have a few that were under 1 pound (ca. 454 gram) towards the end of the season. These were an excellent seller at the farmers markets because of the flavor being juicy, sweet, and low in acidity. They make for a great slicing and canning tomato.
Be sure to check out our tomato contest. Also, we have more 1 pound plus 1 pound (ca. 454 gram) tomato varieties here. We plan on expanding this category in our 2022 season.
