About Our 2021 Growing Season
About Our 2021 Growing Season Here At Bounty Hunter Seeds
In this blog, we are going to discuss our 2021 growing season. We did a lot of new things, but we definitely had some highs and lows during the growing season.
Sowing Tomato Seeds Inside
This year we added more t-posts to grow 750 tomato plants. Along with that, we grew several types of beans and some flowers too. We started off making a list of tomatoes we wanted to grow and then planted them in cell trays which we start under lights at the beginning of February. Everything was going great until we up potted the plants, for some reason we lost more than we usually do when up potting. So we had to restart some varieties’.
Hardening Off and Planting Plants 2021
Next we lost a few plants, hardening them off and getting them acclimated to the weather outside before going into the ground. This is usual every year, that why we always start extras because things happen and everyone looses plants somewhere along the way. We got everything planted we used an auger for drilling the holes made this process go much faster. Then we started to string our rows to keep the plants up.
Animals In The 2021 Season
When we put all the plants in the ground, we tagged them and made a garden map. We are so glad we did. Our first big challenge was dealing with neighbors pet chickens and turkeys coming over and pecking the tags out of the garden. We used scare tape which worked for most of the season until the end which they realized it would not hurt them, and it did not faze them from getting into the garden. This is a challenge we will not have next year we talked, and they are going to pen them up.
Weather In The 20201 Season
Every year this is a challenge in one way or another, either being too hot and dry to being too rainy. Well this year it decided to give us both here, yay us. We would have a 2-week stretch of hot and humid weather, 80s-90s in temperature. Then followed by a solid week of rain and still the temperatures being in the 80s. This pattern happened during the whole 2021 summer. A lot of people here in Pennsylvania had troubles with their plants from pests and diseases from the weather. We had a pretty good year, even because of the weather. We made sure to spray for our plants for pest and diseases about every 2-3 weeks. If the weatherman was calling for a lot of rain, we made sure to spray our plant a day before it was going to rain a lot.
What We Got Out Of Our 2021 Season
We ended up squeezing over 7,000 pounds (3.18 ton) of tomatoes for seeds. Also, we have gotten to meet new customers at the farmers market and picked up a few more restaurants that were purchasing tomatoes. Had to invest in a gas powered commercial fogger to make spraying easier and faster due to the rains, which will help for years to come. Lastly we made it through another season me, my mom and my son and gotten to spend time together.
