Top 5 Best Canning Tomatoes of 2022
In this blog, we will be listing our top 5 canning tomatoes from our 2022 season. We picked these tomatoes due to production and also flavors. Some of these tomatoes could make excellent sauces too. Cow’s Tit Tomato
Cow’s Tit Tomato –A great tomato to make sauce, pastes, or even canning. These are very meaty with few seeds in them. A mid-season plant with wispy regular leaves. Cow’s Tit Tomato was found by Keith Mueller amongst Mountain Pride and Better Boy tomato plants. We are so glad he discovered and saved this tomato. The flavor of this tomato is on the sweet side. This tomato is in our top 10 to make sauces with. We like these better than Roma tomatoes because of the size. Golden Gates Tomato
Golden Gates Tomato –A mid-season variety with regular leaves. An indeterminate plant which produces these lovely yellow tomatoes with greenish/ orange stripes. When they ripen fully, more of the orange will come out to create a golden coloring. This is a great producer of these 2oz (ca. 76 gram) to 4oz (ca. 151 gram) fruits. Golden Gates Tomato is a delicious, sweet tasting tomato with little acidity. An excellent tomato for sauces, canning, or fresh eating. Opalka Tomato
Opalka Tomato –These tomatoes are an heirloom tomato that comes from Poland. They came to New York in the early 1900s. Opalka Tomato is a mid-season variety with regular leaves. These elongated tomatoes make great sauces, canning, or pastes because of their meatiness. This is an indeterminate plant that is a monster producer of these 7oz (ca. 265 gram) red tomatoes. Sausage Tomato
Sausage Tomato –There are several colors for Sausage Tomato. The other colors for sausage tomato would be green and cream. We really liked the red one version we grew this year. Once they started to ripen, it seemed like it was never going to quit producing. These were the one of the last tomatoes that stayed on the vine until the frost killed them. They mid-season plant and a long keeper tomato. This is an indeterminate that is prolific. If you do a lot of canning sauces, or pastes, this would be the tomato you would want to grow. Siccagno Tomato
Siccagno Tomato – This is also known as Siccagno De Valledolmo Tomato. This is an old rare heirloom tomato from Italy. A very popular Sicilian tomato for many Italian dishes. It is a compact variety and could be considered a dwarf tomato. They will also grow good in containers as well, since they only get to be about 2 feet (ca. 61 centimeters) to 3 feet (ca. 91 centimeters) tall. This is a determinate plant and will produce heavily for 4 to 6 weeks. A mid-season tomato plant with regular leaves. These tomatoes have a sweet but acidic flavor. Siccagno Tomato are an excellent tomato for sauces, pastes, dried, and canning. We have a video review of this tomato on YouTube.
