Home Gardener Saving Tomato Seeds
If you are saving tomato seeds, what do you do with the rest of the tomato after all the tomato seeds are squeezed out. There are numerous ways to use the leftover pulp. First, you can cook with the leftover pulp and make a great dinner out of the pulp. Another thing you might like to do is dehydrate the tomatoes for later. If you are a home gardener and have more tomato pulp than you know what to do with, you can cook it down and make sauce. Another way to utilize the extra tomato pulp is to can it. You can use the pulp by canning sauces, stewed tomatoes, or as crushed tomatoes which could be used throughout the winter.
Market Seller/Large scale Saving Seeds
Now for the market seller/large scale grower, what to do with the extra pulp. As a large scale grower you can do the same as the home gardener, but there is only so much time to get so much done without the tomatoes going bad. Another option is to go to restaurants and offer the pulp for sale to them. Most restaurants like this idea because they are getting a great product with less labor involved. These restaurants will be cooking the tomato pulp down to create dishes on a larger scale and even make their own sauces.
Composting
This is what you can do if you do not have enough time to can and have too much tomato pulp. Take all the extra pulp that is left over and place it in a pile for next year to spread on the garden. We also want to mention you can place your leftover tomato plant in the compost pile also, but if the plants or tomatoes have diseases like blight, just throw them away. The reason for this is it will infect your compost pile and when you spread it on the garden you will infect that season’s garden.
