Starting More Seeds Than You Need
Why You Should Start More Seeds Than You Need
We will discuss several reasons you should start more seeds than what you need in this blog. We will be explaining why you need to start more than you plan on planting. Also, if all the seeds take, what to do with the extra plants and when. You have many positive options if too many seeds started.
Reasons To Start More Seeds
First reason to start more seeds than need is for example you only plant 2 seeds because you only want to plant 2 plants, what happens if those 2 seeds do not germinate. If you planted 10 seeds, and we will say 5 germinated, you have 3 extra plants. But now with those same 5 plants you go and up pot to get bigger plants you might lose 1 here, so now you only have 2 extra plants. Ok then it is becoming time to harden plants off and get them use to the sun and weather conditions, especially if you started under lights. If started under lights until you harden them off this is tricky and time-consuming and if you are doing large quantities it is likely you will lose some plants in this process. Another reason you want extra plants is once the plants go into the ground, small, you might lose some to the weather. Hot sunny days will fry young plants, or a lot of rainy days in a row and drowns them.
What To Do If You Have Extra Plants
There are several things you can do if you have a lot of extra plants, if you have no space in your garden. First, you can give the extra plants to family and friends. Next, you can donate them to your local food bank. Another way to get rid of the extra plant is to sell them at a local flea market, Farmers Market, Or online. Trust me, if you utilize one of these ways, the extra plants do not go to waste and someone will enjoy them.
When To Get Rid Of Your Extra Plants
Depending on how many extra plants you have, is when to get rid of them. If you only have a few extras, we would wait to make sure the plants planted are established, be for getting rid of them. Plants end up being established outside about 2-3 after being put into the ground. But having a bunch of extra plants at the time when you start planting is a good thing. We would get rid of the majority of the extras with still holding onto a few of each variety just in case we lose some, we can replace them in the ground or containers if growing outside.
Hopefully this helps your future seed stating ventures. We wish everyone great success in the current growing season. You might want to follow our progress throughout the year on Instagram or Facebook.
