Tools To Make Deseeding Peppers Easier

In this blog, we will be discussing some tools to use while deseeding peppers. Most of these tools we will be listing here especially help in deseeding super hot peppers.

Gloves

We use latex gloves when deseeding peppers. Latex gloves work great because we get a bunch in a box and are disposable. In the past, we were able to purchase a box of latex glover for around $5.00. But since Covid-19, they have doubled and even tripled in price for one box. No matter the cost, we will always use them because they save our hands a bit from the oil from the peppers.

Masks

Next, we use mask/face covering to cut down on the fumes and particles from super hot peppers. Yes, you can use the mask/coverings everyone was using during Covid-19. Those mask/coverings help cut down inhaling in the airborne particles and fumes. But if you are deseeding a bunch of super hot peppers, a painter’s mask cost a bit more and will help cut down more airborne particles. These can be purchased at any auto parts stores. The best mask to buy when deseeding a lot of super hot peppers would be a respirator gas mask. These masks can range in prices from $30 to $200. A decent gas mask would be around $50 and can be used for years to come. For us, the gas mask is the way to go, just because it eliminates the most fumes and airborne pepper powder.

Dehydrator

A dehydrator is another valuable tool when deseeding peppers. Yes, deseeding super hot peppers you can let the pepper pods dry naturally by the sun. But we have done this in the past in our greenhouse. We let them dry out on paper plates with the names written on them. But you can also use a dehydrator to dry out the pepper pods. This process is much quicker with a dehydrator but make sure not to go past 80 degrees while dehydrating the pods. Any temperatures exceeding 80 degrees will start effecting your pepper seed germination rates and will start to damage the seeds.
