How I Started Growing Tomatoes
How I started Growing Tomatoes
This Blog I will explain my journey in gardening. I will explain where it all started to how I got into growing mainly tomatoes.
Where Gardening Started For Me
Back in the early 1980s, my grandfather had 44 acres in the country, which was the family farm. But when his kids had kids he only farmed 1/4 acre of land since he was in his 70s at the point. My dad and I would go over and help get his equipment ready a couple of weeks before he was ready to start disking and rototilling at this time I did not realize this would help me later in life. Next he would disc the garden and after that he would use a manure spreader to spread the manure on the garden then till it all in. By the following weekend, we would go over and help him plant all the vegetable plants he had started in his basement. Every hole was hand dug by a shovel back then (now days I use an auger to do my holes, it is faster and easier). Then, when the vegetables came in, we would go over and help pick the garden. He would give away a lot of vegetables to his family, friends, and we would also be preparing vegetables for him to can during the week.
Next Step In Gardening For Me
In the 1990s, My grandfather was not doing the garden that much because he got cancer and passed away. But my dad continued a small garden during the 90s until 2000. At this time I learned about drip irrigation, and he used garden plastic also to prevent as many weeds. Most of the items he grew were just beans, corn, cucumbers, and tomatoes. The garden size was about 50′ x 100′ and it was enough for us growing up and to give some to his sister and her family that lived across the street from us.
The Last Part Of My Garden Journey
The last Part Starts in 2010 after going through 2 back surgeries. I am thinking what am I going to do, I started to research and got into seed trading. While trading seeds, I started to read a lot of gardening books I was getting used online. I also was purchasing lights to grow indoors since because of my back issues and not having equipment, let alone trying to use the equipment. I will say people think growing in a controlled environment is easy, I can honestly say it has a bunch of challenges also. Peppers were the first vegetable I got into growing on my own, not tomatoes. After doing this inside for a few years I started to grow outside around 2016 this is when I got into growing tomatoes all the different sizes, colors and flavors. I knew if I could grow inside now I have a ton of space outside I can grow all sorts of tomatoes but not without new challenges. So since 2016 I have steadily expanded the garden each year last year we were at an acre of tomatoes, with some flowers and a few beans. This 2022 season we are going to expand again with still an acre of tomatoes and adding more beans along with the addition of peppers.
Thank You
I would like to thank my family for helping learn and grow over the years, the ones here and gone. I also want to thank the customers who purchase our seeds, it is greatly appreciated, without you this is not possible. Lastly, I would like to thank my friends. The ones that live close and online. They helped me from liking my post, sharing posts, helping fix equipment to keep farming and helping with the computer website to keep it running correctly.
